There were an estimated 4,181 Ontarians from African and Caribbean communities living with HIV/AIDS in Ontario in 2006. These communities have seen significant increases in HIV/AIDS in recent years.

The strategy on HIV/AIDS for African and Caribbean Communities in Ontario was developed by the HIV Endemic Task Force, which later became the African and Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario (ACCHO). ACCHO is a coalition of service providers, researchers, policy makers and individual community members working to prevent the spread of HIV among African and Caribbean communities in Ontario.

The strategy's objectives are to :

• co-ordinate the work of agencies, institutions and policy makers working with and for African and Caribbean people in the areas of HIV prevention, education, health promotion, care and support
• facilitate community development in response to HIV/AIDS challenges
• support outreach workers throughout the province whose role is to promote awareness of HIV/AIDS and access to prevention information and other resources and services
• develop a provincial HIV prevention social marketing campaign to address various factors that affect HIV risk and transmission in African and Caribbean communities in Ontario

ACCHO has developed the Keep it alive campaign to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in African and Caribbean communities in Ontario. The campaign encourages adults and youth from Africa and the Caribbean to fight HIV/AIDS stigma, to know their HIV status by getting tested, and to practice safer sex.
