HIV and AIDS : Gay and Bisexual Men

In 2006 there were an estimated 15,700 gay or bisexual men infected with HIV in the province. This accounts for over 60 per cent of all HIV infected people in Ontario.

Ontario's Gay Men's HIV Prevention Strategy

The Gay Men’s HIV Prevention Strategy promotes a multi-faceted approach to HIV prevention amongst gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with men (MSM). It recognizes the specific issues that affect ethno-racial MSM, trans men and HIV-positive men, and uses a sex-positive, sexual health and risk and harm reduction framework as a foundation for guiding HIV prevention work.

The strategy seeks to reduce HIV transmission amongst gay and bisexual men through a co-ordinated, province-wide framework of activities.

The strategy was created by a steering committee composed of government representatives, researchers, community representatives and people infected by HIV/AIDS.

The strategy provides funding for :

  • outreach workers who work in local community-based AIDS service organizations in communities across the province, and
  • a provincial HIV prevention social marketing campaign.
