Questions and Answers about Primary Care

If I need a flu or allergy shot, do I have to see my family doctor?

Family doctors are key members of the health care team. However, there are other health care professionals who are trained and qualified to administer injections to you.

If I am sick after work hours do I have to go to the hospital?

If you think it's an emergency, you should go to the nearest hospital. However, you should be aware that there are several alternatives for you and your family after hours. For example the Family Health Team will offer extended hours Monday through Thursday and one day on the weekend (check with your FHT for the exact hours of extended service) on certain days of the week.

You will also have access to THAS, the Telephone Health Advisory Service where a registered nurse will provide you with advice about what to do about your concern, and with your permission, report back to your doctor. Check with your FHT to see what they advise for after hours care.

Telehealth Ontario also provides free access to a registered nurse 24/7 at 1-866-797-0000. A Telehealth Ontario nurse can provide both health advice on a specific problem or general health information. They do not diagnose and do not replace your physician.

Do I have to go to the doctor's office to get health care advice?

Some doctor's offices have call in telephone help lines and some provide help and clinical assistance on email. Check with your doctor to see if this is available to you.

Telehealth Ontario also provides free access to a registered nurse 24/7 at 1-866-797-0000. A Telehealth Ontario nurse can provide both health advice on a specific problem or general health information. They do not diagnose and do not replace your physician.
