Fourth Quarter Investments

The Fourth Quarter Investments included in the 2008 Budget reflect the priorities of the government’s five-point economic plan to invest in skills and knowledge, enhance Ontario’s competitiveness, strengthen the environment for innovation, invest in infrastructure, and form key partnerships to strengthen Ontario’s industries.

Before proceeding with any investment, the government assesses proposals as part of planning processes such as Results-Based Planning and preparation of the Budget.

In the case of Fourth Quarter investments, the government has implemented a process to ensure due diligence has been completed by the Ontario public service.

Recipients of Fourth Quarter Investments must comply with accountability provisions that are consistent with transfer payment directives. This includes report-backs on how funds are used, the opportunity for independent audit and verification and the right to recover funds.

These Fourth Quarter Investments are part of the government’s fiscal plan to ensure the achievement of balanced budgets while making investments that help build the economy of the future.

Fourth Quarter Investments – Residential Hospices
Improving End-of-Life Care in the Community

The McGuinty government is improving the province's health care system by providing a grant of over $14 million to the residential hospice sector. The investment will support the work of the hospices to improve quality of life for Ontarians.

A residential hospice is a home-like environment where people with life-threatening illnesses receive end-of-life care services. Residential hospices provide compassionate care and comfort to people who, in the last stages of their lives, cannot be cared for at home.

Investments – Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House

Ontario is assisting seriously ill children and their families by providing a one-time capital grant of $9 million to support the development of a new and expanded Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House.

Toronto’s Ronald McDonald House provides accommodation for families who travel to Toronto from all over the province of Ontario to seek specialized medical treatment for their children for cancer; cardiac care; trauma-related injury care; lung, liver, bone marrow, heart and other transplants; neonatal care and other serious illnesses.
