Ministry Reports

Lyme Disease - 2006

Epidemiological Report

There were a total of 38 confirmed cases of Lyme disease (LD) reported in Ontario in the year 2006.

From these cases :

  • 11 (29%) were acquired in Ontario
  • 23 (60.5%) were related to travel outside the province of Ontario
  • 4 (10.5%) were classified as 'unknown' with respect to the location of exposure

The eleven (11) cases were recorded in different regions in Ontario.

The number of LD cases for 2006 is consistent with the LD trends observed in the past five years in Ontario.

Since the majority of cases acquired in Ontario in 2006 are not from LD endemic areas, it is essential that treating physicians obtain exposure and risk factor information on diagnosed cases of Lyme disease.

Such data permits the identification of potential LD endemic areas for prevention and control of this disease.
