Ontario has appointed transitional councils to the four new health regulatory Colleges – homeopathy, kinesiology, naturopathy and psychotherapy. The transitional councils will develop regulations, policies and by-laws to manage and administer the new Colleges’ statutory obligations under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the respective profession-specific Acts.
Health regulatory Colleges develop and maintain standards of practice, entry to practice requirements, standards of professional ethics, and promote and develop standards for continuing competence among members. Various committees of the Colleges function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the issuance, suspension and revocation of certificates of registration to practise in Ontario.
Regulating health care professions and appointing transitional councils are important parts of HealthForceOntario, the province’s health human resources strategy for ensuring Ontarians have access to the right number and mix of qualified health care providers, now and in the future.
