September 24-29, 2012 is Environmental Public Health Week

Mandate of the September 24-29, 2012 is Environmental Public Health Week

I am pleased to have another opportunity, in my third year as Chief Medical Officer of Health, to acknowledge the tireless work done by environmental public health professionals.

Environmental public health professionals provide a critical link to timely information for population health protection, disease prevention and intervention. They play a vital role in helping to reduce exposure to environmental hazards and encouraging healthy practices in our communities by conducting investigations and providing on-going education, inspections and enforcement regarding all aspects of environmental health. This includes areas such as food safety, air quality, safe drinking water and recreational water settings such as beaches, pools and spas.

Environmental public health professionals have consistently gone beyond the call of duty in crisis situations. They have continuously demonstrated expertise and professionalism in protecting the health of Ontarians. On behalf of all Ontarians, I would like to thank them for their ongoing efforts and dedication.

Arlene King, MD, MHSc, FRCPC
Chief Medical Officer of Health
