On June 28th, 2007, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care asked the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC) to provide advice on whether paramedics and emergency medical attendants should be regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA) and if so, what would be the appropriate scope of practice, controlled acts and titles authorized the profession. The referral was reconfirmed by the Minister on February 25, 2009; March 26, 2010; and April 19, 2011.
In preparation for this report, HPRAC conducted key informant interviews, literature, jurisdictional and jurisprudence reviews, and an assessment of the current oversight system, as well as an extensive public consultation program between April and July 2013.
At this time, no decisions have been made. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is offering stakeholders an opportunity to comment on the recommendation contained in HPRAC's Paramedicine in Ontario before a decision is made by the Minister.
