Ontario Increasing Wages for Personal Support Workers

Province Continuing to Invest in Home and Community Care

June 22, 2015

Ontario is following through on its commitment to invest in personal support workers (PSWs) to better recognize the important role they play in our health care system. Investments in PSWs help seniors and people with complex care needs receive support and care in their homes and in the community, where they want to be.

Starting August 1, 2015, the province will continue increasing the minimum base wage from $14.00 to $15.50 for eligible PSWs, who provide publicly funded personal support services. This increase will be retroactive to April 1, 2015.

An increase of $1.50 per hour up to a maximum of $19.00 per hour will be provided to all individuals providing publicly funded personal support services in the home and community care sector.  This follows through on the PSW wage enhancements originally announced in April 2014.

Ontario is expanding eligibility to include PSWs who provide care as part of adult day services, overnight respite and the Centre for Independent Living Toronto program. Wage enhancements will be provided for these PSWs for eligible hours worked retroactive to April 1, 2014.

As part of our efforts to attract and retain the best PSWs in the home and community care sector, the government will continue to implement its PSW Workforce Stabilization Strategy, including initiatives such as:

Quote

“We know that Ontarians would prefer to receive care in their own homes and communities and personal support workers play a critical role in making this possible. Our government is committed to working closely with our partners to better support PSWs, including improvements to their wages in recognition of the important role they play in our health care system."
- Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care
