Ontario Adding New Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics

McGuinty Government Issues Call For Eight More NP-Led Clinics

June 24, 2008

News

Ontario will be improving access to family health care with the addition of eight Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics.

The Ontario government is inviting applications from health care providers and/or community-based groups to establish a total of eight Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics in the following Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs): North West, North East, Erie St. Clair, North Simcoe Muskoka, Central West, Central East, Champlain and South East. These LHINs were selected based on the percentage of residents without a family health care provider, the prevalence of chronic disease, and current access to health care services.

The call for applications closes on July 30, 2009. The new clinics will be announced in the fall of 2009.

Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics are a team-based approach to front-line health care. Nurse Practitioners work with other health care professionals, such as family doctors, to provide quality care closer to home. The clinics focus on comprehensive family health care services, including chronic disease management, health promotion and disease prevention and work along side other community-based health care organizations, such as public health units.
