Minister Of Health And Long-Term Care Deb Matthews, And Minister Of Children And Youth Services Laurel Broten, Issued The Following Statement Regarding The Release Of The Report By The Select Committee On Mental Health

August 26, 2010

We thank the Members of the Select Committee on Mental Health and Addictions for their hard work in preparing this report. The committee’s non-partisan approach and willingness to delve into the issues faced by those struggling with mental health and addictions challenges was unprecedented. Thank you to the organizations, experts, and in particular the families and survivors who provided input and shared their experiences with the Committee.

We’re committed to creating a mental health and addictions system that provides the right supports to people when they need them, as close to home as possible. This report will bring us closer to reaching that goal.

We know that there is more to do to strengthen mental health and addictions supports for all Ontarians. Work is already underway to improve integration and collaboration to better meet the needs of children, youth, families, adults, and communities. We will continue to do more.

We look forward to reviewing the report and will take it into consideration along with the recommendations made by both the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care’s Advisory Group, our ministerial colleagues and our partners as we work to develop a comprehensive 10-year mental health and addictions strategy for Ontario.

Hon. Deb Matthews
Minister of Health and Long-Term Care
