2009 Health Research Showcase

Linking Health Research and Quality Health Care for Ontarians

The Health Research Showcase was held October 8, 2009 at Queen’s Park, bringing together more than 230 ministry and LHIN representatives, as well as leaders from the broader health care sector to spend the day with ministry funded health services researchers.

The overarching theme for the 2009 Health Research Showcase was Linking Health Research and Quality Health Care for Ontarians. A key goal of this event was to translate leading health services research into evidence-based policy, practice and innovation.

More than 70 posters highlighted three themes :

• The Frontiers of Care – productivity and innovation
• Caring with Open Arms – access and equity
• Caring with All Our Might – capacity and efficiency

 

Canadian Health Services Research Foundation founder, Jonathan Lomas, moderated a lively panel discussing evidence informed decision making within their organizations that featured:

• Adalsteinn Brown, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health System Strategy Division
• Tom Closson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Hospital Association
• Gwen Dubois-Wing, Chief Executive Officer, North West Local Health Integration Network
• Vivek Goel, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion
• Sharon Straus, Scientist, Keenan Research Centre, Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital

 

Participants took away:

• Greater clarity on quality in the context of the health care system and realistic expectations of the role that health services research can play in this context;
• An appreciation of the conditions necessary for the provision of cost-effective, quality health care; and
• Clear directions and examples for improving quality of Ontario’s health care system.
