Increasing Supply

Partners in Building Ontario's Physician Supply

Part of Ontario's HealthForceOntario strategy is to ensure Ontario has the right number, mix and distribution of doctors.

Medical Schools

The province works closely with Ontario's medical schools to make sure the education system has enough support to produce the optimal number of doctors. The medical schools co-ordinate medical education and training.

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)

The CPSO is responsible for regulating physicians in the public interest and for ensuring that they provide health services in a safe, professional and ethical manner. The Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA), and associated health profession legislation set out the governing framework for the regulated health professions in Ontario.

HealthForceOntario Marketing and Recruitment Agency

Recruiting health care professionals, including doctors, is part of the work done by HealthForceOntario.

Our Achievements

Some of Ontario's achievements in building the physician supply include :

  • Expanding first year Undergraduate Medical Education spaces in Ontario by 38 per cent between 2004/05 and 2011/12 – 260 new spaces.
  • Increasing the number of family medicine Postgraduate Medical Education residency positions in Ontario by 160 per cent between 2004/05 and 2013/14 – 326 new positions.
  • More than doubling the number of training positions and assessments available to International Medical Graduates (IMGs) since 2004/05 – 200 positions and assessments each year. This is more training and assessment positions for IMGs than all other Canadian provinces combined, and enables more qualified foreign-trained physicians to train and practise in Ontario.
