Long-Term Care Home Development

Building on Ontario’s Action Plan for Health Care, 2012, and as emphasized in the province’s Patient First: Action Plan for Health Care, February 2015, the long-term care homes sector is understood to be a critical contributor to ensuring that Ontario residents have access to the right care, at the right time and in the right place. Central to this is the redevelopment of older long-term care homes.

To support this priority, and as announced by the Associate Minister of Health and Long-Term Care (Long-Term Care and Wellness) on October 28, 2014, the province is working to deliver on a number of critical components that together will enable the successful launch of the Enhanced Long-Term Care Home Renewal Strategy (the Enhanced Strategy), which is designed to ensure the successful completion of the Long-Term Care Home Renewal Strategy.

To address disparities between older and newer long-term care homes, we are providing additional support to eligible long-term care home operators to help them redevelop their homes, thereby helping to meet the goal of redeveloping 30,000 older long-term care beds under the Enhanced Strategy.

Prior ministry development initiatives included funding the building of 20,000 new long-term care home beds beginning in 1998 and the redevelopment of 16,000 of the province’s older (“D” classification) beds beginning in 2002. Additional initiatives have been undertaken subsequently, including new beds built through the Emergency Department Action Plan (EDAP) program commencing in 2006/07 and the Long-Term Care Home Centres of Learning, Research and Innovation initiative which commenced in 2011.
