Information About Mumps

Since September 2009, there has been an increase in the incidence of mumps in Ontario, with several jurisdictions experiencing outbreaks. The majority of cases have clustered within the 15 to 19 and 20 to 24 age categories. Seventy four per cent of the cases are male.

In Ontario, people born between 1970 and 1991 were likely offered only a single dose of measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine. Most people born after 1991 received two doses and people born before 1970 have likely been exposed to mumps and are considered to be immune.
