Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care security standards have been updated to address network and data vulnerabilities and ensure personal health information and other sensitive information is protected.

Software vendors have been notified that they are required to update their Medical Claims Electronic Data Transfer (MCEDT) and Health Card Validation (HCV) web service products to meet these standards no later than July 17, 2017.

How this affects you as an Ontario health care provider?

This change impacts providers using automated MCEDT software packages to submit claims or download reports and/or those using HCV Web Service software to validate health cards. Web service software that does not conform to the new standard will not be able to access MCEDT or HCV web services after July 17, 2017.

How can I tell if my software vendor has completed the security upgrade conformance testing?

You can visit the ministry's website and scroll down to the MCEDT and/or HCV Conformance Testing section to see if your vendor is listed as completed this upgrade. Please note this means your vendor has completed conformance testing with the ministry to confirm their software conforms to the new standards. They may still need to deploy those changes to you.

How can I tell if my vendor has updated my software?

If you haven't been notified of a software upgrade by your vendor, you will need to contact them.

What if my software isn't updated by July 17, 2017?

Your EMR software will not be able to connect to the MCEDT web service or the HCV web service. You will be able to access the MCEDT web page to manually upload your claims and download reports.
