Vitamin D Testing

Beginning December 1, 2010, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) will only cover the cost of vitamin D testing for patients with the following medical conditions:

For people without these conditions, the cost of a vitamin D test will no longer be covered by OHIP.

The Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee (OHTAC) reviewed the best available medical evidence and found that vitamin D testing in the general population isn’t appropriate or medically necessary. OHTAC also recommended that people follow Health Canada’s guidelines on healthy eating and vitamin D supplementation.

Patients are being encouraged to speak to their health care provider about their individual health care needs and vitamin D testing. Support materials are available to print and share with your patients.
