The Ontario government is improving access to treatment for Ontarians who are struggling with severe obesity by investing $75 million over the next three years to increase the province’s capacity for providing bariatric services including surgery. It is expected that the number of bariatric surgeries performed in Ontario will increase to over 2000 per year by 2011/12. Physicians considering application for prior approval for bariatric surgery out of country or out of province on behalf of their patients are encouraged to contact one of Ontario’s bariatric centres at the contact points provided below prior to applying.

In order for patients to receive services funded by OHIP at WLS in Quebec they must be referred by their physician for assessment at an Ontario bariatric regional assessment and treatment centre (RATC) at one of the Ontario providers listed above.
Physicians may contact the closest RATC to where their patient resides and set up a consultation to determine patient suitability for bariatric surgery. The RATC will complete any required paperwork for suitable patients and forward it to the ministry for funding approval. Approved patients will then be contacted by the WLS to set up a consultation appointment.
