Historically in Ontario, hospitals paid for their own intravenous cancer drugs, This led to unequal access at different hospitals across the province, with some hospitals funding drugs that others did not. The New Drug Funding Program was created in 1995 to ensure that all Ontario patients would have equal access to high-quality intravenous drugs.
The New Drug Funding Program is administered by Cancer Care Ontario on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and provides about 75% of the overall funding for intravenous cancer drugs to hospitals. This ensures that Ontarians are getting more consistent access to life-saving drugs. Public Drug Programs decides what drugs are funded, relying on advice from an expert advisory committee
