Drug System Reforms

Rapid Review Process

The process of reviewing and evaluating drugs before making a decision about whether to fund them is critical for a number of reasons, safety and accountability foremost among them. Ontario’s Rapid Review Process was developed to bring some flexibility to the system in cases where drugs hold the promise of being truly innovative.

Under the Rapid Review Process, the Committee to Evaluate Drugs can begin the funding review process in Ontario before the drug has received federal approval for sale in Canada. To be approved for rapid review, manufacturers must meet a number of submission requirements, including convincing a panel of experts either that the drug is of extraordinary clinical significance or can result in substantial cost savings for taxpayers.

The Rapid Review Process allows for much faster funding decisions, meaning that important drugs can be available sooner to people who need them.
