About The Mumps Vaccine

The MMR vaccine is part of the routine vaccination program in Ontario. You need two doses to be fully protected. If you were born between 1970 and 1991, you probably only received one dose of the vaccine and may not be fully protected from mumps.

Side effects

The most common side effect of the MMR vaccine is mild redness, swelling and pain at the injection site. The MMR vaccine may cause a rash and/or fever beginning five to 12 days after vaccination, which can last for a few days. Allergic reactions and other serious reactions to the MMR vaccine are rare.

The MMR vaccine is safe for most people. You should not get the vaccine if:

• You have had an allergic reaction to the MMR vaccine before.
• You have had an allergic reaction to neomycin or gelatin.
• Your immune system has been affected by a disease or treatment.
• You are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are trying to become pregnant.
• You had a blood transfusion or immune globulin therapy in the last three months.
• You have a fever or infection (anything worse than a cold).
