Questions & Answers About the Flu & Shot

Why hold a flu clinic? The business case :

  • Reduce flu-related absenteeism : An ill employee is generally absent from work for one to seven days. Cough and fatigue can last for several weeks, slowing a full return to work.
  • Employees do not need to take time off to get immunized for the flu, and they are also more likely to get vaccinated if the vaccination is available at their workplace.
  • Save money. The province provides the vaccine free of charge for those who live and work in Ontario. Your business will be responsible for the cost of the health care agency that administers the program. However, research conducted by Nichol et al. (1995) found that even with the cost of the vaccination included, flu immunization resulted in a savings of over $55 per person vaccinated.

Here's how to do it :

  1. Communicate with management, employees and unions. Getting them on board is the first critical step.
  2. Use our tool to find a health care agency to facilitate the clinic. While the vaccine is available free of charge to all those who live and work in Ontario, your workplace is responsible for the costs of the health care agency. Costs may vary between agencies, so it’s best to shop around to find a health care agency that best meets your needs. Is it worth it? See how.
  3. Once your company is in agreement, download and distribute the support materials to educate your employees about the benefits of receiving the flu shot.
