McGuinty Government Improves Access to Health Care in Mildmay
Community Gets Boost As Family Health Team Opens Its Doors

August 20, 2007

MILDMAY – The McGuinty government is increasing access to doctors and nurses for Mildmay-area residents with the opening of the Brockton and Area Family Health Team satellite clinic, Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman announced today.

“Our government believes that the best health care is delivered close to home,” said Smitherman. “That’s why we are creating Family Health Teams like this new satellite clinic in Mildmay to give more people across the province access to a family physician.”

“We know that people don’t get sick conveniently between the hours of nine and five,” said Carol Mitchell, MPP for Huron-Bruce. “Mildmay residents will benefit from improved access to health care services thanks to this new Family Health Team and its staff.”

The Brockton and Area Family Health Team is one of 150 Family Health Teams announced by the McGuinty government since April 2005. Family Health Teams are designed around the needs of each community. They include doctors who work with other health care providers such as nurse practitioners, registered nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, mental health workers and many others depending on the needs of the local area.

“Family Health Teams are pioneering the way we provide primary health care services,” said Smitherman. “It means patients will see health care providers sooner to ensure their health remains intact.”

This is just one more example of how, working together, Ontarians have achieved results in improving and expanding access to comprehensive primary care. Other initiatives include :

  • Creating 16 Family Health Teams in the South West LHIN, that are already providing care to over 220,000 people
  • Investing $1 million to renovate the South Huron Hospital in Exeter
  • Uploading the province’s share of public health funding from 50% to 75%

Today’s initiative is part of the McGuinty government’s plan for innovation in public health care to build a system that delivers on three priorities - keeping Ontarians healthy, reducing wait times and providing better access to doctors and nurses.
