July 17, 2007 TORONTO – Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman has provided The Scarborough Hospital with notice of his intention to recommend to Cabinet that a supervisor be appointed for the hospital. “The Scarborough Hospital has worked hard to manage the governance issues it has been experiencing, However, it is clear that additional assistance is required,” said Smitherman. “The issues are complicated and will benefit from external expertise.” The supervisor’s mandate would be to help resolve governance and hospital board composition issues in order to assist in putting the hospital on a more stable footing going forward. Under legislation, the health minister must notify the board of the hospital at least 14 days before recommending to Cabinet that a supervisor be appointed. On the minister’s recommendation, Cabinet may appoint a supervisor if it considers that it is in the public’s best interest. “Our government has always valued and supported volunteer local governance of Ontario’s hospitals,” said Smitherman. “We will continue to work with hospital boards to strengthen our health care system.” For further information : Members of the media :
