McGuinty Government Announces Finalists for Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo 2007 Awards
18 Ontario Health Care Innovators Chosen From Field Of Over 300

TORONTO – The McGuinty government has announced the 18 health care innovation finalists for the Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo 2007 Awards, Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman said today.

“The expo celebrates Ontario’s most innovative leaders who help make our public health care system better,” said Smitherman. “We are proud to commend these 18 finalists for their leadership, creativity and initiative as they are making a real difference.”

The Health Care Expo 2007 recognizes 18 finalists in six different categories:

Innovations in Health Human Resources

  • Huron Family Health Team (HealthKick Huron)
  • The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences (Defining Clinical Readiness)
  • The Ottawa Hospital (Hiring New Graduate Nurses in the ICU)

Innovations in Health Information Management

  • Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University and Fig P. Software Incorporated (P-PROMPT)
  • Leamington District Memorial Hospital, Kent Health Alliance and Ontario Telemedicine Network, (The Virtual Psychiatric Emergency Room)
  • Thames Valley Family Practice Research Unit (International Classification of Primary Care)

Improving Efficiency Through Process Redesign

  • Dryden Area Family Health Team (It’s Your Health!)
  • Holland Orthopaedic and Arthritic Centre, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (New Assessment Model for Hip and Knee Replacement)
  • Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, University Health Network (Improving Continuity of Care:  Electronic Sign Out)

Improving Quality and Patient Safety

  • The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (Paediatric Standardized Concentrations)
  • Group Health Centre in Sault Ste. Marie (Health Promotion Initiatives (HPI))
  • St. Michael’s Hospital (Ticket to Home)

Innovations in Health Promotion

Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo 2007 showcases innovative solutions and projects supporting the health care system in Ontario. More than 200 exhibitors and 14 high-level workshops will focus on important health care issues such as: health promotion, improving patient care quality and safety and innovations in health human resources. The expo presents an opportunity to learn about new programs and approaches that are making our health care system better across Ontario.

The highlight of this year’s expo will be the Minister’s Award Ceremony, where the Honourable
George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care will present awards to six of the most meaningful health care innovators. The event takes place on May 24, 2007 at 10:30AM at the Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario.

“We are excited to build on the successes of last year’s event and to make the 2007 Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo bigger and better than last year,” said Hugh MacLeod, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health System Accountability and Performance Division, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. “The expo acknowledges the truly innovative ways that people across the health care system are strengthening health care for all Ontarians.” 

Today’s initiative is part of the McGuinty government’s plan for innovation in public health care, building a system that delivers on three priorities – keeping Ontarians healthy, reducing wait times and providing better access to doctors and nurses.
