What Experts are Saying About Proposed Changes to How Ontario’s Health Professionals Provide Services

News Release Printable Version [PDF]

May 11, 2009

“We’re pleased that the government has proposed these changes. This is the first review in 15 years of regulated midwifery in Ontario. These are the kinds of skills women expect from their midwives. Pregnant women under the care of midwives need to be able to access the appropriate services in a timely way. We believe these changes would move us in that direction.” – said Katrina Kilroy, President of the Association of Ontario Midwives.

“This legislation would bring Ontario another step closer to using pharmacists to the best of their abilities. It would recognize their vital role as health care professionals, with accountability and responsibility not only for the procurement and dispensing of medications, but also for their safe and effective use by patients. Enabling pharmacists to practice in an enhanced collaborative role would improve patient care, reduce wait times, and increase the efficiency of Ontario’s health care system." – said Dennis Darby, Ontario Pharmacy Association’s chief executive officer

"We applaud the Minister's proposed reforms concerning the scope of practice of Medical Radiation Technology. These changes would be consistent with the current practice of Medical Radiation Technology, which would help to ensure quality patient care and facilitate effective inter-professional collaboration throughout the health care system." – said Craig Willson, the Chair of the Board and President of the Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Technologists.

"Dietitians are looking forward to enhancing access to client-centered nutrition care and to collaborating with professions across the health care system. This would be an important step by the Ontario government to enhance the role of Registered Dietitians in health care." – said Linda Dietrich, Regional Executive Director with Dietitians of Canada.

"Ontario is working to ensure patients have improved access to health care. A legislative change to enhance and refine the scopes of some health professionals is a positive overall step. We look forward to working with the government and all health professionals to ensure that these changes are successful." – Dr. Ray Koka, President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

"The proposed changes would allow nurses across Ontario to not only improve access for patients, but to enhance patient safety in an increasingly complex health care system,"said Anne Coghlan, Registrar of College of Nurses of Ontario. "We are looking forward to working with the McGuinty government as they continue to take steps towards utilizing health care professionals to their full potential."
