Tour Description:

The Tour is a forum for representatives of underserviced communities, from Northern Ontario and southern rural areas, to meet and recruit health care professionals, medical residents and students in medicine, nursing and rehabilitation.

Targeted Professionals:
The Tour targets the most required disciplines in underserviced areas, i.e. medicine (family practice and specialties), nurses, nurse practitioners, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, chiropodists, pharmacists and audiologists.

Tour Format:
The Tour takes on a job-fair approach, giving community representatives, students and professionals a chance to meet to discuss the medical opportunities and the lifestyles of their respective communities. The week-long Tour also offers recruiting communities and organizations a unique opportunity to network and share ideas on common issues.

The Tour is held in a hall with community booths usually displayed around the hall. The walk-in public, i.e. health care professionals, residents, students and guests, may visit the communities of their choice, anytime during the reception hours.

Tour Partners/Administration:
The Health Professionals Recruitment Tour is administered by the Professional Association of Internes and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO). As you may be aware, PAIRO has more than a decade of commitment working with communities and stakeholders to help address the challenge of physician recruitment and retention. Many have participated in our regional forums during the 1990’s or have spoken with our new physicians when they presented to communities or the ministry on sustainable recruitment and retention solutions. We look forward to partnering once again with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines who are co-sponsors of the Tour. The Tour is a successful component of the government’s strategy to help northern and southern rural communities satisfy their requirements for health care services. The first Tour was spearheaded by the Ministry of Health in 1978.

The Tour is both a short-term and a long-term recruitment strategy:  short-term when dealing with established health care professionals ready for a change in lifestyle and when dealing with postgraduate students on the verge of making a decision as to where to practice; long-term when dealing with medical students having several years of studies and training to complete before establishing their practices.

Underserviced Area Program (UAP):
The Underserviced Area Program is managed by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s North Region, Primary Health Care Program in Sudbury. Their mandate is to address health issues in Northern and rural Ontario.
