Alternative Model Critical Care Response Teams

With the Intensivist-Led CCRTs model established, the Ministry is embarking on a program to test a range of alternative CCRT models in smaller community hospital settings through a demonstration project.

From October 2nd to 27th 2006, Ontario hospitals that care for critically ill patients but do not have large ‘Level 3’ ICUs are invited to submit their application for an Alternative Model CCRT. A number of hospitals will be chosen to participate in the demonstration project based on this application process.

This demonstration project will lay the foundation for future expansion of CCRTs to community hospitals across the province.

Through the demonstration project, the Ministry will be looking to define several alternative CCRT models that can be consistently funded to achieve clearly defined outcomes.

Hospitals interested in participating in the Alternative Model demonstration project will be required to define the :

  • service provided (including the hours of service)
  • staff complement needed to provide the service
  • education requirements to prepare staff to provide the service
  • targets of the service
    • patient population
    • process outcomes
    • clinical outcomes
    • cost savings associated with avoided patient deterioration
  • implementation plan for the project
  • evaluation plan for the project
  • detailed budget for both the implementation phases and established service

The Application Template [MS Word Format] for this open and competitive process will be available for download on October 2nd. Successful applicants will be identified in November.

Applicants with questions regarding the Alternative Model Call for Applications, or the Application Template, should contact Robert McKay, Manager, Critical Care Secretariat by email or phone at the information listed below.
