Critical Care Information System (CCIS) CCIS now capturing data from all Level 3 adult medical/surgical ICUs in Ontario
As of December 2007, all Level 3 adult medical/surgical intensive care units across 65 hospital corporations have "gone live" with the Critical Care Information System (CCIS) and are reporting data on admitted ICU patients, interventions performed to address care needs, and utilization of Critical Care Response Teams. This is a significant achievement. Congratulations and thank you to all hospitals and the CCIS Provincial Team for achieving this milestone within just one year! Throughout 2008, the CCIS will be rolled out to approximately eighty specialty critical care units across two implementation waves (Wave 4 and Wave 5). When this implementation is completed CCIS will represents the most comprehensive source of province-wide information on access to critical care, quality of care, and outcomes for critically ill patients. Two application upgrades to improve system functionality are also scheduled for this year. The important next phase of understanding and using the data generated by CCIS is well underway. Critical care stakeholders, including the Critical Care LHIN Leads, ICU managers, ORNGE, Trillium Gift of Life and Safer Healthcare Now!, collaborated in a process of defining appropriate critical care indicators for helping hospitals, the LHINs and the MOHLTC use the CCIS data to understand the critically ill patient population and resource utilization patterns across the province. The development of hospital, LHIN and provincial quarterly reports based on the proposed indicators is being spearheaded by the Critical Care LHIN Leads. The Critical Care LHIN Leads have reviewed and refined a quarterly report that will be distributed to the system over the next two months. Hospitals will receive data on their own critical care unit(s), as well as a provincial summary report. In addition to the provincial summary, the LHIN will receive information on all hospitals in the LHIN that contributed data to CCIS. These are early stages in interpreting and using the information from CCIS, and the Critical Care LHIN Leads will use this initial report to engage hospital and LHIN leadership in discussions to enhance the health system's understanding of the data. For more information on the provinicial roll-out of the CCIS, please read our FAQs [PDF]. |
