Critical Care Secretariat

The Critical Care Secretariat, established June 2004, is the managing body responsible for the overall implementation and evolution of the Critical Care Strategy. It reports to Dr. Bernard Lawless, Provincial Lead Critical Care and Trauma.

As a provincial strategy that enables and encourages all Ontario hospitals providing critical care services to be involved, the Critical Care Strategy continues to be thoroughly informed by clinical and administrative leaders from across Ontario.

The Secretariat's key mandate is to work closely with the field to implemet programs that improve access, quality and integration of critical care services to meet the needs of critically ill patients.

It consults regularly with three provincial tables in the delivery of its mandate :
  • Critical Care Expert Advisory Panel
  • Critical Care LHIN Leaders Provincial Table
  • Trauma Expert Advisory Panel
Its key functions include :
  • Implementation of the strategy's 7 funded programs
  • Gauge future needs, and develop the strategies to effectively meet them
  • Provide support to the Critical Care Expert Advisory Panel, Trauma Expert Panel, LHIN Leaders Provincial Table
  • Provide support to the CritiCall Interim Governance Committee
  • Establish and achieve Critical Care Performance and Quality Benchmarks, by facilitating the development and adoption of best practices
  • Support the identification, adoption, diffusion and retirement of required technologies
  • Assist and advise Critical Care LHIN Leaders and LHIN staff with the development of resource allocation and utilization plans
  • Foster the development of academic papers through specific research and evaluation reports
  • Communication and Reporting of the Strategy's findings and successes to inform and motivate active participation and response in this and other jurisdictions
