Critical Care Strategy
What's New

“Your Guide to Critical Care” - Educational Webcast Series
The Critical Care Strategy, in partnership with the Ontario Hospital Association, has launched an educational video series for patient and families.

Changes to 2008/09 Coaching Team Application Process
The Critical Care Coaching Team Application process has been streamlined to make it easier for hospitals to apply to benefit from this valuable resource. Hospitals can now complete the simplified, one-time yearly application form and indicate their preferred topic and timing for the coaching team visit by selecting from four different time periods throughout 2008/09.

Applications are due by midnight on Friday, July 11, 2008.

The latest news about the progress of the Province's Critical Care Strategy is available in our most recent monthly report  [PDF].

On January 30th 2006, Minister Smitherman announced a $90 million strategy to improve critical care services in Ontario. The Critical Care Strategy is the result of an on-going collaboration between critical care healthcare providers, hospital administrators, ministry officials and others.

The overarching objective of the strategy is to improve access, improve quality and enhance the overall health system by addressing the policy, funding, and operational issues that contribute to wait times for critical care across the system.

The strategy is comprised of seven closely linked initiatives, which have been developed as a result of extensive research into the work taking place in other jurisdictions :

  • Critical Care Response Teams (CCRT)
  • Critical Care Capacity Management and Surge Planning
  • Health Human Resources
  • System-Level Training
  • Critical Care Information System (CCIS)
  • Performance Improvement Collaborative
  • Ethical Issues of Access

The Critical Care Strategy is being implemented under the direction of Dr. Bernard Lawless, Provincial Lead, Critical Care and Trauma. The implementation process is supported by the Critical Care Secretariat.
