LHIN Leadership and Support

Fifteen Critical Care Local Health Integration (LHIN) Leaders, including one representing each of the fourteen LHINs across the province, and one provincial representative for paediatric critical care, have been formally established to support the implementation of the Critical Care Strategy.

Critical Care LHIN Leaders are clinical experts who work collaboratively with hospitals, LHIN CEOs and the ministry. They report to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Health System Accountability and Performance Division, and their respective LHIN CEOs. Their mandate for their LHIN is to lead the :

  • Planning and coordination of systems-level and LHIN-level critical care service delivery;
  • Measuring and improvement of critical care services;
  • Planning, rehearsal and event management of critical care surge capacity;
  • Demand forecasting, resource allocation and priority setting of services, and
  • Represent the LHIN at the provincial table addressing operational and planning issues in critical care.

Ontario's Critical Care LHIN Leaders are currently engaged in :

  • Enhancing surge capacity and response planning in hospitals across the LHINs;
  • Developing province-wide critical care training programs for physicians, nurses and other health care providers with the Canadian Resuscitation Institute;
  • Maintaining the province-wide inventory of critical care services, and
  • Working with data obtained from the province's recently implemented Critical Care Information System to :
    • Develop critical care scorecards and performance measurement and management tools to support decision-making at local and system levels, and;
    • Improve the efficiency of critical care resource allocations.
