Trauma Services Ontario has 11 designated Lead Trauma Hospitals. The number of major trauma patients in Ontario has increased over the past 15 years. There continues to be concerns about equitable access to safe high quality trauma care, about whether trauma care is being provided as effectively and efficiently as possible, and the ability to monitor access and quality and improve performance. There also continues to be growing concerns that more traumas need to be prevented and their impact on people and the system reduced. These impacts are significant. In 1999, the total annual cost of intentional and unintentional injuries in Ontario was more than $5.7 billion. In April 2006, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (Ministry) established the Trauma Expert Panel, under the leadership of Dr. Murray Girotti, to provide timely expert advice on improving the access, quality, efficiency, safety and accountability of trauma services in Ontario. The Panel is advising the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, through Dr. Bernard Lawless (Provincial Lead, Critical Care and Trauma) and Dr. Alan Hudson (Provincial Lead, Access to Services and Wait Times). In September 2006, the Report of the Trauma Expert Panel was completed. In it, the Panel makes 19 recommendations for advancing and improving trauma care in Ontario and identifies 8 elements of a provincial trauma plan. For more details, read the Expert Panel’s Full Report [PDF]. |
