How Drugs Are Approved : Funding Decisions
The CED/Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) Subcommittee
The Ministry and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) have developed a collaborative approach for the review of all cancer drug products through a joint CED/CCO subcommittee. The CED works with experts from CCO to review new cancer drugs that have been submitted for consideration of public drug program funding in Ontario via the ODB Program and/or the New Drug Funding Program (NDFP). The CED/CCO subcommittee reviews, evaluates, and provides advice to the CED on which cancer products should be made available through either the ODB program or the NDFP. The CED then makes a final recommendation to the Executive Officer. This subcommittee aligns the review processes to allow for consistency in approach for cancer drugs under ODB and NDFP. For information about the NDFP, please refer to the Cancer Care Ontario website. The CED/CCO Subcommittee generally meets on a monthly basis. There are no published targeted timelines for this new review process; however, the Ministry is committed to moving drug products through the review process in a timely manner and have done so in 3 months on average. The CED/CCO subcommittee has committed to using the same criteria for evaluation as the CED. To date, the subcommittee has recommended products for funding for which they have found significant clinical (efficacy or safety) benefit versus the standard of care as well as a high level of confidence that the product is cost effective (i.e. provides good value for money). Find out more about the CED/CCO subcommittee, the submission process and drugs that are covered in the Drug Submissions section of this site. See also : |
