The Government's Plan to Reform Ontario's Drug System
Improving Patient Access to Drugs
The government's plan is for a drug system that operates more efficiently and that provides better drugs, faster. Changes to Ontario's Public Drug Programs have resulted in a new, faster and more transparent approval process and increased access to drugs.
- Recent reforms to Ontario Public Drug Programs have improved access to new drugs through a new conditional listing process that allows drugs to be conditionally listed for coverage by Ontario Public Drug Programs. As well, the government created a new process called Exceptional Access, a program that handles requests, on a case-by-case basis, for drugs that are not funded under the Ontario Drug Benefit Program. The process for requesting exceptional access is being streamlined to minimize the paperwork for physicians and make it more transparent to prescribers and patients.
