The Government's Plan to Reform Ontario's Drug System

Promoting the Appropriate Use of Drugs

MedsCheck

Recognizing the valuable role pharmacists play in patient care, the government invested $50 million in compensation for professional pharmacy services. The new program called MedsCheck, was launched on April 1, 2007 by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, collaboratively with the Pharmacy Council and the Ontario Pharmacists' Association. MedsCheck is a medication review provided by pharmacists to improve patient safety and treatment. Through one-on-one interactions, community pharmacists may provide patients with a medication review service to help them understand their medication therapy and ensure that medications are being taken as prescribed. MedsCheck is the first pharmacists' professional service available under the Ontario Drug Benefit Program.

Highlights

  • On April 1, 2007, MedsCheck (one medication review per year) was introduced for recipients of the Ontario Drug Benefit Program
  • On July 1, 2007, MedsCheck (one medication review per year) was extended to all eligible Ontarians
  • In November 2007, the program was expanded to include "Follow-Up" MedsCheck
  • As of November 6, 2007 127,507 Ontarians participated in MedsCheck
  • As of October 20, 2007 approximately 95% of all pharmacies have participated in MedsCheck
