Emergency Medical Assistance Team (EMAT)

The Emergency Medical Assistance Team (EMAT) is a self-sufficient unit that provides a staging and triage base for evaluation and management prior to transporting a patient to a hospital. The EMAT can be deployed within 24 hours to anywhere with road access in Ontario.

Any jurisdiction in Ontario that finds it does not have the capacity to respond effectively to a health emergency can request the EMAT. More information is available in the EMAT section of this site. Please see the menu bar on the left side of this page.

Hospital Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear (CBRN)
Emergency Preparedness Program

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has allocated $13.5M over three years to equip all hospital sites that offer emergency/urgent care with a standardized package of CBRN supplies and equipment. More information is available in the CBRN section of this site. Please see the menu bar on the left side of this page.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has expanded the CBRN program to include the province’s public health units. Each health unit has received a standarized package of CBRN supplies and equipment, and staff training will be completed by March 2007. The training component of this initiative will be delivered in two parts: an on-line pre-course review and a two (2) day face-to-face session.

The curriculum developed for this initiative will enable health units to gain an understanding of the context of CBRN events including :

  • the potential of a CBRN incident including possible targets;
  • the role of the health system as a whole, and specifically public health, in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from a CBRN emergency;
  • the role of other organizations including police, fire, and municipalities in a CBRN emergency; and
  • the Incident Management System (IMS).

For more information, please visit www.ceep.ca/resources_pubhealth_cbrn.htm; or contact the emergency management unit.

Emergency Infection Control Kit

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care distributed more than 15,000 Emergency Infection Control Kits to licensed community physicians, midwives, and Community Health Centres (CHCs), including Aboriginal Health Access Centres (AHACs).

This kit is intended to be used only in large-scale infectious disease emergencies such as an influenza pandemic. More information is available in the Emergency Infection Control Kit section of this site. Please see the menu bar on the left side of this page.

National Emergency Stockpile System (NESS)

The mission of the National Emergency Stockpile System (NESS) program is "to have sufficient quantities of supplies in support of the provision of provincial health and social services in their efforts to alleviate pain and suffering and to save the lives of Canadians and others who are affected by natural and human caused disasters."

The NESS equipment and supplies are made available to the Provinces/Territories on a loan basis. More information is available in NESS section of this site. Please see the menu bar on the left side of this page.
