Re-allocation of 96 New Long-Term Care Beds in South Niagara – Request for Applications

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, in conjunction with the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), is inviting applications by any party interested in developing and operating 96 new LTC beds in South Niagara (communities of Welland, Port Colborne, Wainfleet and Pelham).

These 96 beds were previously approved for development by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in August 2007 under the Emergency Department Action Plan, however the construction of the beds has not been achieved to date and these beds are available for reallocation.

The application package and associated policy documents are now available for download at 2012 South Niagara request for applications.

Long-Term Care Home Renewal Strategy

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care plans to redevelop 35,000 “B”, “C” and Upgraded “D” class long-term care beds to ensure equitable access to quality long-term care home accommodation.

An announcement for a call for applications was made on April 2nd, 2009 to select the first 7,000 beds for renewal.

Emergency Department Action Plan

As part of a broader Emergency Department Action Plan announced in October 2006, a number of communities were identified to receive new long-term care (LTC) home bed allocations. Decisions regarding the locations of these new beds were based on a number of factors including Alternate Level of Care (ALC) pressures in acute care hospitals, high demand for LTC home beds relative to the supply in an area and replacement of LTC home beds that were closing.

LTC home bed allocations were made to the following communities: Guelph, Hastings, Kingston, London, Ottawa, South Niagara, South Simcoe, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Windsor.

20,000 New Beds and “D” Bed Redevelopment

In 1998 the Government of Ontario announced a program to build approximately 20,000 new redevelop up to 16,000 existing “D” class LTC home beds. Part of this initiative included a new funding program and a new set of long-term care design standards.
