About West Nile virus
West Nile virus (WNv) is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause encephalitis. The virus was named after the West Nile region of Uganda, where it first appeared in 1937. WNv is spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by biting an infected bird. The virus is not spread by person to person contact. It cannot be spread from a bird to a human. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) worked with the local Public Health Units and Health Canada to develop the following WNv surveillance bulletins. These publications require knowledgeable interpretation and are intended primarily for health care professionals. |
