The Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion
As part of its commitment to Operation Health Protection, the government has launched Ontario’s first-ever provincial Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (Agency.) The Agency will bring academic, clinical and government experts together to create a centre of public health excellence in the province. The Agency will be a centre for specialized research and knowledge in public health, focusing in the areas of infectious disease, infection control and prevention, health promotion, chronic disease and injury prevention and environmental health. It will provide technical and scientific assistance, rapid on-site field support, as needed, specialized communication and training, as well as standards input and practical tools for implementing best practices. For more information about the Agency, visit its web site at www.oahpp.ca Legislation to Create the Agency
On December 12, 2006, the government introduced the Health System Improvements Act (Bill 171) that lays the groundwork for the creation of the Agency – among other things. For more information, see the Health System Improvements Act. The Legislation received Royal Assent on June 4, 2007. Building on the Advice of Experts
Following the SARS outbreak, several high profile reports recommended the creation of a public health agency for Ontario. In January 2005, the Agency Implementation Task Force was established to examine these reports and make recommendations to government on the design and implementation of the new Agency. Part I of its report Building an Innovative Foundation: A Plan for Ontario’s New Public Health Agency (October 2005) put forward a mandate, vision, mission and core values for the Agency. In its final report, From Vision to Action: A Plan for the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (March 2006), the task force described how the Agency could strengthen health protection and health promotion activities in Ontario, modernize laboratory services and provide greater access to scientific expertise and technical support for local public health units, other health care providers and ministry partners. |
