Dr. David Williams, currently Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health will also act in the role of the province's Chief Medical Officer of Health effective November 1, 2007. In his new role, Dr. Williams will continue the development of effective public health programs and services that promote and protect the health of the people of Ontario.
Prior to assuming this responsibility, Dr. Williams held the position of Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health and Director of Infectious Diseases Branch, in the Public Health Division, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, from September 2005.
Dr. Williams served as a Director with United Mission to Nepal Hospital from 1982 to 1990. Shortly upon his return to Canada in 1990, Dr. Williams was appointed the Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District and has held that position from 1991 to 2005. He also served as the Chair on the Minister of Health's Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases from 2001 to 2004 and Co-Chair on the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee from 2004 to 2005.
Dr. Williams is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto where he received his Masters in Health Sciences: Community Health and Epidemiology. He holds a fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada.
