Individuals considering a career in paramedicine should contact one of the training colleges or institutions to determine their required course texts. Ontario Ministry of Health Basic Patient Care Life Support (BLS) Standards
(Version 2.0) January, 2007 The BLS Patient Care Standards is used by all Ontario paramedics as the standard reference for the delivery of patient care. The standards set out a logical ordering for all of the inter-related activities and practices necessary to effective deliver pre-hospital emergency patient care, activities which start with the paramedic’s initial contact with a patient and continue throughout patient’s encounter with the ambulance system. This standard provides updated clinical information and improved medical practice standards along with updated paramedic protocols that have been introduced since the last publication in 1999, e.g., the Canadian Triage Acuity Scale used by paramedics and hospitals to identify a patient’s degree of distress, new cardiopulmonary resuscitation protocols. Approximately 6,600 Ontario paramedics are governed by the revised BLS standards and these standards continue to form the basis for the entry-to-practice primary care paramedic training curriculum offered at approved provincial colleges and training institutions. The Basic Life Support Patient Care Standards (Version 2.0) is available in PDF format as a download, as well as in hard-copy and CD-ROM formats from : Publications Ontario ISBN: 1-4249-2122-8 (print)
