Information for First Responders
Personal Preparedness
Personal preparedness is critical for all Ontarians in the event of an Influenza Pandemic. This section will include helpful information for First Responders to protect themselves, their families and the public.
In the event of an influenza pandemic, as a First Responder, you can reduce your risk by :
- Practicing good hand hygiene – including the frequent use of alcohol-based sanitizer (gel or wipes) handy at work, home and in the car;
- Practicing proper cough and sneeze etiquette;
- Getting your flu shot every year – the flu shot will not protect you from a pandemic flu virus, but it will protect you from getting ordinary flu, which could weaken your immune system or resistance to the pandemic flu;
- Staying home when you are sick;
- Avoiding large crowds of people where viruses can spread easily, where possible if there is an outbreak in your community;
- Following any instructions given by employer and local public health officials;
- Making a plan with your family or loved ones; and
- Ensuring you have a personal/family emergency kit.
