Ontario Drug Benefit Program: Maximum Supply of Medication for Ontario Drug Benefit Recipients Travelling Out of Province

What is the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program’s maximum supply of medication policy for ODB recipients travelling out of the province?

If you are an ODB recipient travelling outside the province for between 100 and 200 days, the ministry will pay for a vacation supply of medication, of up to 100 days, before you leave Ontario (provided that your prescription allows for the additional 100 days’ supply).

If you have less than 30 days supply of medication on hand, the ministry will allow and pay for an early re-fill of your next 100 day supply and also pay for a second 100 day vacation supply for a total of 200 day supply.  If you have more than 30 days supply of medication on hand, the ministry will pay for only the 100 day vacation supply.

The additional 100 days’ supply of medication does not apply to those recipients who are eligible for the ODB program through Ontario Works.  These recipients are still limited to a maximum of 35 days’ supply.

For Trillium Drug Program recipients, vacation supplies will not be granted in the third and fourth quarter of the benefit year (i.e. from February 1st – July 31st).

How does this affect me?

Before you leave the province, in order to obtain an early refill for a second supply of up to 100 days of medication, you must provide the pharmacist with :

  • a letter (which you have written yourself) confirming that you are leaving the province for more than 100 days,
  • OR

  • a copy of your travel insurance, confirming that you are leaving the province for between 100 and 200 days.

Your normal co-payment will also apply to the second 100 days' supply and the early re-fill if you qualify.

Does this policy affect me if I am not travelling outside of Ontario?

This policy does not apply to ODB recipients who remain in Ontario- the ODB program’s maximum 100 days' supply policy remains in effect i.e., the ministry will only pay for up to a 100 days’ supply of medication at one time (or 35 days’ supply for those eligible to ODB through Ontario Works).
