The Smoke-Free Ontario Act

The McGuinty government is protecting the health of all Ontarians by prohibiting smoking in all enclosed workplaces and enclosed public places in Ontario as of May 31, 2006. The new tobacco control legislation, to be called the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, received third and final reading on June 8, 2005 and Royal Assent on June 13, 2005. The legislation will also strengthen measures to ensure only those 19 years of age and older can buy cigarettes and will phase out the display of tobacco products, with a complete ban beginning May 31, 2008.

The Ministry is drafting regulations to assist in implementing the Smoke-Free Ontario Act on May 31, 2006. Read more
