National Health Council monitors and reports from the national stage

As a result of the First Ministers' Accord on Health Care Renewal in February 2003, the National Health Council was created to improve accountability and monitor the progress of this accord.

Its members are informed, passionate people who have been given the job of offering challenging and diverse views about healthcare in Canada.

Each province and territory sought out residents, and nominated up to four potential candidates to act as an expert or public representative on the national health council.

Selection Criteria for Expert and Public Representatives for the National Health Council

Public candidates were to have one or more of the following characteristics :

  • Demonstrated interest in health care issues;
  • Experience in addressing health care issues at the local/community level; and
  • Well-respected leaders in their community.

Expert candidates needed one or more of the following characteristics :

  • Expertise in health system issues;
  • Expertise in patient/client issues;
  • Experience as a health care provider;
  • Expertise in other relevant areas, including performance measurement in health, governance and accountability, or public finance; and
  • Well-respected leaders in their field of expertise.

The National Health Council reports through federal, provincial and territorial Ministers of Health and includes a chair, 13 government representatives, and 13 expert and public representatives.

Members (both expert and public) are not to act as representatives of particular organizations.

The council's chair and members were announced by Health Canada December 9, 2003.
