E. coli

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has concluded an investigation into E. coli cases with the same DNA fingerprint occurring in several local public health units. A source causing the outbreaks was not found.

E. coli are bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. There are different types of E. coli; some not harmful to people and some, such as E. coli O157: H7, cause serious illness.

The Ministry worked with local public health units, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Public Health Agency of Canada on the investigation.
