Commission Expands Work in Four Communities


May 4, 1998, Toronto – The Health Services Restructuring Commission (HSRC) today announced that it will expand its review of health services to include:

The review is part of a province-wide initiative to preserve and improve Ontario’s health services.

"Our goal is to achieve the best possible publicly-funded health system for the people of Ontario," said HSRC Chair, Dr. Duncan Sinclair, the former Dean of Medicine at Queen’s University. "Our work will improve the local health systems so people in these areas are better served."

The Commission will develop a design for hospital restructuring in these areas as well as essential reinvestments in home care, long-term care, mental health and rehabilitation to rebalance health services.

Community Input Invited

The HSRC makes decisions based on the quality, accessibility and affordability of the local hospital system. The HSRC takes into account the expanding needs resulting from a growing and aging population.

The Commission will study District Health Councils’ restructuring recommendations and will review written submissions from interested people and organizations. Anyone interested in submitting can call 1-800-565-4453 for guidelines on submission format and length. The deadline for submissions is

May 19, 1998.

The HSRC is a group of individuals appointed by the Ontario government to redesign the Ontario health system. It is an independent agency of doctors, health care educators, hospital administrators, former hospital board members and other experts.

Request for Submissions

The Health Services Restructuring Commission has been established by the Ontario Government to make decisions about hospital restructuring and to advise the Minister of Health on restructuring of other health services.

The Commission believes that members of the public and concerned interest groups should be part of a broad-based discussion of restructuring initiatives to improve management, delivery and funding of the Province's health services system. As part of this discussion, we invite your written comments on your district health council’s (DHC’s) proposals for health services restructuring in your community/region.
