Toronto, March 13, 1998 - The Health Services Restructuring Commission (HSRC) today announced its plan to transfer services from the Wellesley Central Hospital (WCH) to St. Michael's Hospital (SMH).
"The hospitals made progress to come to an understanding. Nevertheless, they could not reach a complete agreement by the February 13, 1998 deadline. Therefore, today we are announcing a plan that will see the transfer of the WCH services to SMH by April 6, 1998," said Duncan Sinclair, Chair of the HSRC.
Under the plan, SMH will create a standing committee of its Board that will advise the Board on matters relating to the management and operation of the programs and services of the WCH.
Further, one-third of the elected members of the SMH's board will be elected from nominees of the WCH as well as two of the four medical staff positions on the board.
The Central Hospital site of the WCH will become an ambulatory care centre, the Sherbourne Hospital Corporation. SMH will be responsible for incorporating the Sherbourne Hospital Corporation, with initial board membership of one-third each from WCH, SMH and the community. The Toronto East General Hospital will identify the community nominees.
Sinclair said: "Establishing a specific plan and timeline are important to ensure that patient care is protected during the transition period and improved once restructuring is completed."
Today's Notices of Intention to Issue Supplementary Directions include a ten-day response period. Interested organizations and individuals are invited to comment on the HSRC recommendations by March 23, 1998. Final Supplementary Directions will follow shortly thereafter. These Notices provide further detail to the Commission's plans for these hospitals that were issued on July 23, 1997.
