Mergers:

April 1, 1998 -- The Mississauga Hospital and Queensway Hospital amalgamate
February 1998 -- Addiction Research Foundation; Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, Queen Street Mental Health Centre, Donwood Institute amalgamate to form the Addiction and Mental Health Services Corporation

May 1, 1998 – North York General will assume operation and management of North York Branson
April 20, 1998 – Minister announces $225 million to improve hospital emergency services in Ontario
April 6, 1998 – St. Michael’s Hospital assumes operations and management of programs and services of Wellesley Central Hospital
March 3, 1998 – Notices to University Avenue hospitals regarding their report on ways to further consolidate programs and services
February 1998 – The Toronto Hospital assumes operation and management of Doctors Hospital
January 1998 – Completion of Framework Agreement – Human Resources Labour Adjustment Plan for Toronto hospitals
January 23, 1998 – Health Minister Elizabeth Witmer announces creation of Women’s Health Council
Ongoing – amalgamation negotiations between Orthopaedic and Arthritic Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and Women’s College hospital

In the July 23, 1997 report on Toronto, the HSRC indicated that it would appoint fact finders to provide advice on the best approach to develop a medical human resources adjustment plan for Toronto, London and Ottawa. The fact finders were appointed in August 1997
The report of the fact finders was published on January 12, 1998. A response period for interested parties followed and then analysis by the HSRC
On April 27, 1998, the HSRC is issuing its Notices of Intention to Issue Directions for hospitals in Toronto and the GTA/905
The HSRC is inviting responses to the Notices by May 11, 1998. After analysis of the feedback, the HSRC will issue its Directions

The HSRC intends to direct all amalgamating or hospitals assuming the operations of other hospitals to offer appointments to physicians from all affected hospitals
During this transitional phase, the hospitals will prepare a medical human resources plan that ensures equity and fairness. The plan will determine hospital needs and then grant physician appointments to fulfill the hospital’s role within the restructured system
